Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure used to correct droopiness in the eyelid. Droopy eyelids are not uncommon as people age and the skin of the eyelid stretches and muscles supporting the eyelid grow weaker. The result may be the accumulation of fat in the area, which can cause droopy eyelids, bags under the eyes, and may even affect the position of the eyebrows. Many who experience droopy eyelids feel that they look older as a result. Some may even experience limited peripheral vision. Blepharoplasty is a trusted surgical procedure utilized by Dr. Camposto help his patients reduce the appearance of droopy, puffy upper or lower eyelids.

The procedure may remove excess skin, muscle, or tissue from the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both to improve the appearance of sagging eyelids or to improve problems with vision that may arise as the eyelids start to droop. You will consult with Dr. Campos before undergoing the procedure to discuss your goals and expectations. A better understanding of the procedure and its capabilities will help you make a more informed decision as to whether a Blepharoplasty is right for you. During this time you will go over your medical history and a physical examination may be performed.

An incision may be made at the fold of the upper eyelid, and any excess skin, fat, or muscle may be removed. If working on the lower eyelid, an incision may be made at the fold under the eyelashes, or even inside of the eyelid. Tiny stitches are used to close any incisions, and most leave very faint scars that are barely noticeable, if at all.

You will likely be administered a local anesthetic along with sedation that makes you drowsy during and immediately after the procedure. For this reason, it is important that you have somebody to drive you home afterwards. Make the necessary arrangements and expect to spend a bit in a recovery area where you will be monitored for a short period. Afterwards, you may go home to finish your recovery. An ointment may be provided to lubricate the eyes. You might experience blurry vision, double vision, sensitivity to light, and other temporarily side effects after the surgery. Expect some swelling and bruising for at least a week.

Over-the-counter pain medications should be discussed with Dr. Campos before taking them to prevent problems with bleeding. Ice packs are commonly recommended to reduce swelling after the procedure. You may be encouraged to avoid certain activities in the days or weeks after the Blepharoplasty procedure such as exercising, or heavy lifting. Sunglasses should be worn to protect the eyes when outdoors, and patients are often encouraged to sleep with their head above the chest.

Discuss recovery with Dr. Campos before undergoing the procedure, and feel free to contact him with any questions or concerns as you recover. If you have drooping eyelids, bags under the eyes, or other problems affecting the eyelids, talk to Dr. Campos about whether a Blepharoplasty procedure is right for you.
