One of the most well-known Aesthetic procedures on the market, Botox is an injectable treatment used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles that form as we get older and the skin loses some of its elasticity. Do not confuse Botox with Dermal Fillers, which add substances to the skin that may be lost in the aging process. Botox is used to treat dynamic wrinkles, which are the result of the contraction of facial muscles. Instead of supplying the skin with substances it may have lost over time, Botox works by paralyzing the muscle that causes the wrinkle to form. Botox, therefore, is generally not used to treat static wrinkles, which appear even when the muscles are not contracting; those wrinkles may require dermal fillers to resupply the skin with collagen, hyaluronic acid, etc.

Botox is injected into the muscle that is causing the dynamic wrinkle. The botulinum toxin contained in the injection stops the transmission of nerve impulses that are sent to the muscle telling it to contract. Because these impulses are blocked, the muscle cannot receive them and does not know to contract. With the muscle unable to contract, the wrinkle is unable to form. The initial results from each session of Botox may take a few days to become evident. It may take a few weeks for optimal results to appear. The results typically last up to six months as the effects of the treatment wear off gradually. After three to six months, another treatment session is required to maintain the results of the injection. However, over time chemical denervation may occur, meaning the muscle will become less responsive.

The procedure itself is minimally invasive and is performed in about 10 minutes, depending on the number of wrinkles being treated. A small needle is used to inject the treatment into the muscle. Some might feel a slight discomfort that feels like a stinging sensation as the injection is made, and a small prick from the needle is not uncommon. After the treatment you can resume your normal activities and return to work. There is no recovery period or downtime required, adding to the convenience of the treatment.

Dr. Campos will go over the possible side effects of Botox, which include headache, flu-like symptoms, respiratory infection, eyelid droop, nausea, redness around the injection site, and facial pain. Some may experience weakness in their muscles. Individuals who may not be considered for this treatment include those with a neuromuscular disorder, or anybody who has an allergy to an ingredient found in Botox. Inform Dr. Campos of your medical history as well as of any medications that you are taking at the time to prevent complications.

Examples of dynamic wrinkles are crow’s feet, glabellar lines, and worry lines. If you have any of these wrinkles and would like to explore treatments for getting rid of them, set up your consultation with Dr. Campos to go over your options. Many have reduced the appearance of these wrinkles with Botox, and in the process have achieved a more youthful appearance.
